In November 2020, Tourism Flanders purchased the historic Slagmolen, located between the nature reserves De Maten and the Stiemerbeek Valley. At the beginning of 2025, renovation of the old mill began in order to restore it to working condition. The site will also host the visitor center, with a café for walkers and visitors, an information desk about the nature reserve, offices, and a meeting room. In the meantime, Natuurpunt Genk runs an outdoor bar in a covered, heated tent in the green garden of the Slagmolen. In this way, this place—which has always been a symbol of bringing people together—can once again be a warm welcome for the people of Genk, as a visitor center for the surrounding valuable nature. The opening of the new visitor center is planned for the summer of 2026. The condition of the building itself is unfortunately not yet sufficient to open the indoor venue. But feel free to enjoy a coffee, a Gageleer beer, or a Bio Lemonade in our cozy tent or green garden. Combine your visit with a beautiful walk through De Maten, wander across the dunes and enjoy the water, follow the boardwalk along the Stiemerbeek Valley towards the center of Genk, or stop by for a drink during a cycling trip through De Wijers, land of 1001 ponds. The volunteers of Natuurpunt Genk are eager to welcome you, and it is sure to be a pleasant experience! Rent our Outdoor Bar for any event! Host your party, meeting, or training session in the green oasis of the De Maten nature reserve. Our covered and heated Outdoor Bar accommodates 45 seated guests and features a spacious outdoor terrace. Perfect for any occasion, from drinks to business meetings. Beverages are available from the operator at affordable prices, and outside catering is permitted.
